What Does The Vaillant Boiler Flashing Radiator Symbol Mean?

Flashing Radiator Symbol On Your Boiler?

Noticed a flashing radiator icon on your Vaillant boiler display and not sure what it’s telling you? You’re not alone — it’s one of the most common queries we receive from homeowners across Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, Rochester, Rainham, Maidstone and Sittingbourne. Here at Guscott Heating, the reassuring answer in most cases is that there’s nothing wrong at all.

What Does the Flashing Radiator Symbol Mean on a Vaillant Boiler?

The flashing radiator symbol on a Vaillant boiler indicates that the boiler has reached its set temperature and the burner has switched off — but the pump is still running. This is completely normal behaviour.

What’s happening inside the boiler at this point is straightforward: the system has delivered the heat your thermostat asked for, the burner has cut out as intended, and the pump continues circulating water to distribute the remaining heat evenly and prevent any localised overheating. Once the system cools to the right level, the pump stops and the flashing symbol disappears.

Think of it as your Vaillant’s way of saying it’s done its job and is winding down safely.

When Is the Flashing Radiator Symbol Normal?

The symbol is a routine part of Vaillant boiler operation and nothing to act on if: Another symbol that often worries owners is the egg timer, which we explain in our guide to the egg timer symbol on a Vaillant boiler.

  • Your heating and hot water are working as expected

  • The symbol appears after the heating has been running and then stops

  • It disappears after a few minutes once the system cools down

  • No fault code or error number is displayed alongside it

In this scenario, the boiler is functioning exactly as Vaillant designed it to.

When Should the Flashing Radiator Symbol Concern You?

The symbol becomes worth investigating if it stays on for an unusually long time, appears alongside other warning signs, or your heating isn’t performing as it should. The most common causes in these cases are: If the symbol is flashing and the heating has stopped altogether, follow our advice on what to do if your boiler breaks.

Low System Water Pressure

If the boiler pressure has dropped below 1 bar, circulation becomes inefficient, and the system struggles to reach and maintain the set temperature — causing the pump to keep running and the symbol to keep flashing. When low pressure becomes serious, the display can show a code instead, which our guide to the Vaillant F22 error code explains.

Check the pressure gauge on the front of your Vaillant boiler. It should read between 1 and 1.5 bar on a cold system. If it’s below 1 bar, repressurise using the filling loop:

  1. Switch the boiler off

  2. Locate the filling loop beneath the boiler

  3. Open both valves slowly

  4. Watch the pressure gauge and stop at 1–1.5 bar

  5. Close both valves and restart the boiler

If pressure drops repeatedly between top-ups, there’s likely a leak somewhere in the system that needs locating by a Gas Safe engineer. Take a look at our guide on common reasons for boiler pressure loss for more information.

Trapped Air in the Radiators

Air trapped in the radiator circuit forces the boiler to work harder to circulate water effectively, which can keep the pump running longer than normal and the radiator symbol flashing.

Bleeding your radiators is the fix — starting from the highest radiator in the property and working downward. Insert a bleed key into the bleed valve, turn anticlockwise slowly until air hisses out, and close the valve once water flows steadily. Check boiler pressure afterwards and top up if needed.

Incorrect Temperature Settings

A flow temperature set too low relative to the heating demand causes the boiler to cycle on and off repeatedly — firing up, reaching the set point quickly, cutting out, then firing again. This produces frequent flashing of the radiator symbol and can feel like a fault when it’s actually a settings issue. Adjusting the flow temperature or reviewing your thermostat schedule often resolves this without any engineer involvement.

Pump or Circulation Fault

If the symbol stays on persistently — well beyond the normal cool-down period — and bleeding radiators and checking pressure don’t resolve it, there may be a circulation fault. A failing pump, a stuck zone valve, or a faulty temperature sensor can all prevent the system from cooling down as it should, keeping the pump running and the symbol flashing indefinitely. This needs a Gas Safe engineer to diagnose properly. If you’re also noticing unusual noises from your boiler, that’s an additional sign the pump or circulation needs attention.

Do I Need to Reset My Vaillant Boiler for the Flashing Radiator Symbol?

In most cases, no. The symbol doesn’t require a reset — it will stop flashing on its own once the system cools. Only consider a reset if the symbol is accompanied by an error code or the boiler stops working altogether. If a reset doesn’t resolve the issue and the symbol persists, call an engineer rather than continuing to reset.

The Role of Annual Servicing

A Vaillant boiler that receives an annual boiler service is considerably less likely to develop the pressure, circulation, and pump issues that cause the radiator symbol to flash abnormally. During an annual service, a Gas Safe engineer checks system pressure, tests the pump, inspects circulation, and tops up corrosion inhibitor — the very things that keep the symbol behaving as it should.

At Guscott Heating, our annual boiler service covers all of this and more across Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, Rochester, Rainham, Maidstone and Sittingbourne. We can also provide you with a new boiler if your Vaillant boiler is over 8 years old and starting to become a bit of a money pit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the radiator symbol flashing on my Vaillant boiler?

In most cases it means the boiler has reached its set temperature and the burner has cut out, but the pump is still running to distribute residual heat. It’s a normal part of Vaillant boiler operation and will stop flashing once the system cools.

How long should the flashing radiator symbol last on a Vaillant boiler?

Typically a few minutes — long enough for the pump to circulate remaining heat and the system to cool to a stable temperature. If it’s been flashing for 20 minutes or more with no sign of stopping, check your pressure and bleed your radiators.

Can trapped air cause the Vaillant radiator symbol to flash?

Yes. Trapped air disrupts water circulation, forcing the pump to work harder and longer. Bleeding your radiators and checking that pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar usually resolves this.

Should I call an engineer if the radiator symbol keeps flashing?

If the symbol persists after checking pressure and bleeding radiators, and no fault code is displayed, it’s worth calling a Gas Safe engineer to check the pump and circulation. If an error code accompanies the symbol, call an engineer sooner rather than later.
