Dimplex Heat Pump Review 2026: Pricing, Pros & Cons

Dimplex Heat Pump Review 2026: Pricing, Pros & Cons

Dimplex is a name most people in Britain have seen somewhere, whether on an electric fire in the living room, a storage heater in a rented flat or a fan heater in the office. Fewer people know that the same group has been engineering heat pumps for decades, and that Dimplex air source heat pumps are now a realistic option for homes moving away from gas, oil and old electric heating.

This Dimplex heat pump review for 2026 looks at the things that really matter once a system is installed: what it costs, how efficient it is, what it costs to run, how noisy it is, what the warranty covers and how Dimplex compares with Vaillant, Daikin, Mitsubishi, Stiebel Eltron and other leading names.

All prices and running costs in this review are approximate 2026 guide figures. A home survey and written quote will always confirm your real cost.

Are Dimplex Heat Pumps Worth It?

Dimplex heat pumps are worth it for many Kent homeowners and landlords who want a well supported, mid priced heat pump from a familiar name, especially if they are interested in the newer high temperature R290 models for older homes. They are not the cheapest option, and they do not yet have the huge base of UK owner reviews that Daikin or Mitsubishi enjoy.

In the UK, Dimplex is based in Southampton and is best known for electric fires, panel heaters and the Quantum range of storage heaters. The group also has decades of heat pump engineering behind it, much of it developed in Germany, and today offers air source heat pumps designed for UK homes.

That combination of a household name, UK based support and genuine heat pump engineering puts Dimplex in a similar bracket to Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Baxi, though as an electric heating specialist rather than a boiler maker.

Pros & Cons of Dimplex Heat Pumps

Which Dimplex Heat Pump Models Are Available?

The Dimplex heat pump models available to UK homes are mainly the Dimplex System M monobloc range and the newer Dimplex EDGE range, covering domestic outputs from around 5kW up to around 16kW. Model line ups and sizes change over time, so your installer will confirm the current Dimplex options and check that the model is MCS certified.

Dimplex System M

System M is a monobloc air to water heat pump using R32 refrigerant. All the refrigerant parts are sealed inside the outdoor unit, and only water pipes run into the home. It is designed to be a straightforward replacement for a gas, oil or LPG boiler, working with radiators or underfloor heating and a hot water cylinder.

Dimplex EDGE

EDGE is Dimplex’s newer generation of heat pump, using R290 natural refrigerant. R290 has a very low climate impact and allows higher flow temperatures, up to around 75°C on some models. That makes EDGE particularly interesting for older homes where replacing every radiator is not practical, putting it alongside other R290 heat pumps such as the Vaillant aroTHERM plus, Viessmann Vitocal and newer Stiebel Eltron, Samsung and Haier models.

What a full Dimplex system includes

  • The outdoor heat pump unit
  • A heat pump hot water cylinder, often from Dimplex’s own range
  • A controller, with smart control on newer models
  • A system filter, valves and frost protection
  • Upgraded radiators or underfloor heating where needed

How the range compares

Dimplex’s range is more focused than the extensive line ups from Daikin, Mitsubishi and Panasonic, which include split systems and hybrids. It is closer in spirit to the monobloc ranges from Baxi, Ideal and Grant, but with the added option of a high temperature R290 model. Value brands such as York, Hisense, Gree and Midea typically cost less, while NIBE and Stiebel Eltron offer broader premium ranges for larger homes.

Are Dimplex Heat Pumps Efficient?

Dimplex heat pumps are efficient, with current models typically carrying an ErP A+++ rating and a seasonal efficiency (SCOP) of around 4.0 to 4.7 at a 35°C flow temperature. That means a well designed Dimplex system can turn one unit of electricity into four or more units of heat.

How efficiency works

A heat pump gathers warmth from the outside air and moves it into your home, rather than burning fuel. Because most of that heat is taken from the air for free, a heat pump produces several times more heat than the electricity it uses. A modern gas boiler, by comparison, tops out at around 90%.

  • COP shows efficiency at one moment and one outdoor temperature.
  • SCOP shows the average across a full heating season, so it is the better figure to compare.

High temperature without the old penalty

The EDGE range can reach water temperatures of around 75°C on some models. Running at high temperatures always uses more electricity than running cooler, but R290 heat pumps handle it better than older designs. This means older homes can often keep more of their existing radiators, while the system still runs at lower, more efficient temperatures for most of the year.

Real world efficiency

Lab figures are always a best case. The Electrification of Heat trial, run by Energy Systems Catapult across around 750 UK homes, found a median seasonal efficiency of about 2.8, while well designed systems achieved much more. A Dimplex heat pump will only reach its potential if it is sized properly and set up to run at low flow temperatures whenever possible.

How Dimplex compares on efficiency

Dimplex sits in the upper middle of the efficiency table. Its EDGE figures are competitive with the Mitsubishi Ecodan, Daikin Altherma 3 and Samsung’s R290 models. Premium options like the Vaillant aroTHERM plus, Stiebel Eltron, NIBE and Viessmann can quote SCOPs close to 5, while Baxi, Ideal, Grant, York, Hisense, Haier, Gree and Midea generally quote around 4.0 to 4.5. The Octopus Cosy 6 and Panasonic Aquarea sit in a similar band.

Kent’s mild climate

Kent and the South East have some of the mildest winters in the UK, with average winter temperatures across much of the county around 5°C to 7°C. Milder air means any heat pump, Dimplex included, works less hard and runs more efficiently over the year.

How Much Does a Dimplex Heat Pump Cost?

A Dimplex heat pump costs roughly £9,500 to £16,000 fully installed before any grant, and around £2,000 to £8,500 after the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The outdoor unit alone is usually £3,500 to £7,000, with EDGE R290 models typically costing more than the R32 System M range.

Dimplex size (approx.) Typically suits Unit only (approx.) Fully installed before grant (approx.) After £7,500 BUS grant (approx.)
Around 5kW to 6kW 2 to 3 bed terraces, bungalows and well insulated homes £3,500 to £4,500 £9,500 to £11,500 £2,000 to £4,000
Around 8kW Typical 3 bed semis £4,000 to £5,200 £10,500 to £12,500 £3,000 to £5,000
Around 10kW to 12kW 3 to 4 bed detached homes £4,800 to £6,000 £11,500 to £14,000 £4,000 to £6,500
Around 14kW to 16kW Larger or older detached homes £5,500 to £7,000 £13,000 to £16,000 £5,500 to £8,500

Guide prices only. EDGE R290 models usually sit towards the top of each range. Your final cost will be confirmed after a survey.

What else is included

  • Hot water cylinder: usually £1,200 to £2,000
  • Radiator upgrades: around £250 to £500 per radiator, fitted, though high temperature EDGE models may need fewer
  • Pipework and electrics: varies with the age and layout of your home
  • Labour, commissioning and MCS certification

How Dimplex pricing compares

Dimplex sits in the middle of the market, broadly in line with Daikin, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Hitachi, LG, Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Ideal and Grant. Value brands such as York, Hisense, Haier, Gree and Midea are usually cheaper, while Vaillant, Stiebel Eltron, Viessmann and NIBE tend to cost more. Octopus Energy and Aira advertise low package prices, so it is worth comparing like for like.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 off an air source heat pump in England and Wales, claimed by your MCS certified installer and deducted from your bill. Homeowners and landlords qualify if the property has a valid EPC with no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations and the heat pump replaces fossil fuel or direct electric heating, including storage heaters. The scheme runs until 2028.

0% VAT

Heat pump installations currently carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, saving 20% compared with the standard rate.

How Much Does It Cost to Run a Dimplex Heat Pump?

It costs around £600 to £900 a year to run a Dimplex heat pump in a typical 3 bed Kent home, depending mostly on your tariff and the quality of the system design. For homes currently heated by storage heaters, the saving can be dramatic, often cutting heating bills by well over half.

The table below compares approximate yearly heating costs, assuming a heat pump seasonal efficiency of 3.5.

Home and heating system Approx. yearly heat demand Approx. yearly cost
2 bed home, storage heaters (around 17p/kWh average) 6,000kWh around £1,020
2 bed home, Dimplex heat pump on a heat pump tariff (around 18p/kWh) 6,000kWh around £310
2 bed home, Dimplex heat pump on a standard tariff (around 26p/kWh) 6,000kWh around £450
3 bed home, storage heaters (around 17p/kWh average) 12,000kWh around £2,040
3 bed home, gas boiler (around 6.3p/kWh, 90% efficient) 12,000kWh around £840 plus standing charge
3 bed home, oil boiler (around 7p/kWh, 85% efficient) 12,000kWh around £990
3 bed home, Dimplex heat pump on a heat pump tariff 12,000kWh around £620
3 bed home, Dimplex heat pump on a standard tariff 12,000kWh around £890

Approximate figures based on typical 2026 energy prices.

Why electric heated homes save the most

Storage heaters and panel heaters turn one unit of electricity into one unit of heat. A heat pump turns one unit into three or four. That is why swapping from electric heating to a heat pump makes such a big difference, particularly in rental flats, bungalows and older homes in towns like Margate, Ramsgate, Folkestone and Dover.

Gas and oil homes

For homes on gas, a heat pump on a standard tariff costs about the same to run as a modern boiler, while a heat pump tariff usually brings it in cheaper. If you close your gas account, you also stop paying the gas standing charge, typically around £110 to £130 a year. Oil and LPG homes in rural Kent usually save more.

Dimplex versus other brands

In the same home, a Dimplex heat pump should cost about the same to run as a Daikin, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Baxi or York heat pump, provided each is designed equally well. Good design and the right tariff matter more than the brand.

Tips to lower your bills

  • Choose a heat pump or time of use tariff
  • Run the heating steadily rather than in short bursts
  • Keep the flow temperature as low as comfort allows, even on a high temperature model
  • Add solar panels if you can

What Is Involved in Installing a Dimplex Heat Pump?

Installing a Dimplex heat pump involves a full home survey, a room by room heat loss calculation, siting the outdoor unit, fitting a hot water cylinder, upgrading radiators where needed and commissioning the system. Most installations take 2 to 5 working days.

Survey and heat loss calculation

Your installer measures each room and checks insulation, glazing, walls and floors to work out how much heat your home loses on a cold day. This MCS required calculation decides the right Dimplex size and range, and shows which radiators can stay.

Planning permission

Most air source heat pumps in England are permitted development, so planning permission is not normally needed. Recent changes in England relaxed the old one metre boundary rule, which helps on smaller plots. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas in places like Canterbury, Faversham, Sandwich and Rye may need extra care with siting.

Fitting and commissioning

The outdoor unit goes on a solid base or wall brackets. Inside, the old heating system is removed, a cylinder is installed and any radiator upgrades are carried out. Your installer then fills and balances the system, sets up the controls, registers the warranty and shows you how to use it. You should receive an MCS certificate, which you need for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

How Noisy Is a Dimplex Heat Pump?

A Dimplex heat pump is about as noisy as other modern monobloc heat pumps, producing a soft, steady hum, with newer EDGE models designed with quieter running in mind. In most gardens it is barely noticeable, and it is usually silent from inside the house.

The 42dB rule

For permitted development and MCS certification, noise at your nearest neighbour’s window must not exceed 42 decibels. Your installer checks this during the survey. In closely packed streets in Gillingham, Chatham or Broadstairs, where you place the unit is the most important factor.

What you might hear

  • A gentle fan and compressor hum while heating
  • A little more noise on very cold days
  • A brief whoosh during defrost cycles, which is normal

How Dimplex compares on noise

Dimplex sits in the middle of the pack. The Vaillant aroTHERM plus, Stiebel Eltron and some Viessmann models are among the quietest, with Quiet Mark accreditation on several units. Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Samsung offer well regarded low noise modes, while value brands like York, Hisense, Haier, Gree and Midea are broadly similar to or slightly louder than Dimplex.

Placement tips

  • Keep the unit away from bedroom windows on both sides of the fence
  • Avoid enclosed corners and narrow passages that echo
  • Use a solid base with anti vibration feet
  • Use any night or quiet mode settings

What Maintenance Does a Dimplex Heat Pump Need?

A Dimplex heat pump needs a professional service once a year, typically costing £120 to £200, plus a few simple checks you can do yourself. Annual servicing keeps it running efficiently and is usually needed to keep the extended warranty valid.

What an annual service includes

  • Cleaning the outdoor coil and checking the fan
  • Cleaning the system filter and checking water pressure
  • Testing frost protection and any antifreeze levels
  • Checking the cylinder and its safety valves
  • Inspecting wiring, sensors and controls
  • Reviewing settings and performance data

Easy checks at home

Keep leaves, plants, bins and snow clear of the outdoor unit, with roughly 30cm of space around it. If the controller shows a fault message, note it down before calling your installer.

Finding an engineer

Dimplex has a solid UK presence thanks to its electric heating business and Southampton base, though its dedicated heat pump engineer network is smaller than those of Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal or Daikin. It is better supported in the UK than value brands such as York, Hisense, Haier and Gree, which rely more on distributors.

Coastal homes

In seaside towns like Whitstable, Herne Bay, Deal and Hythe, salt air can wear the outdoor coil faster. Ask about coastal protection and rinse the unit gently with fresh water every few months.

For landlords

Heat pumps do not need the annual gas safety certificate that gas boilers require, but keeping a yearly service record protects your warranty and shows tenants that the heating is well maintained. For landlords used to low maintenance storage heaters, a once a year service is a small step up for a large drop in tenants’ bills.

What Warranty Comes With a Dimplex Heat Pump?

The warranty that comes with a Dimplex heat pump is a manufacturer warranty from Dimplex UK, with longer extended cover available when the system is fitted by an approved installer, registered and serviced every year. Terms can differ between the System M and EDGE ranges and may change over time, so always ask your installer to confirm the current warranty in writing.

What is usually covered

  • Manufacturing faults in the outdoor unit and Dimplex supplied parts
  • Repair or replacement of covered components
  • Support from Dimplex’s UK technical team

What is usually excluded

  • Faults caused by poor installation or design
  • Frost, storm, flood or accidental damage
  • Problems linked to missed annual services
  • Parts made by other manufacturers

Questions to ask

  • How many years of cover come with the model I am being quoted?
  • Does the warranty include labour as well as parts?
  • What must I do to keep the extended warranty valid?
  • Who handles claims: the installer or Dimplex UK?

How Dimplex’s warranty compares

Vaillant offers up to 10 years on the aroTHERM plus through approved installers, Grant and Ideal offer up to 7 years, and Daikin and Mitsubishi typically offer around 5 to 7 years through their schemes. Stiebel Eltron, NIBE and Viessmann provide extended cover through their own networks.

Value brands such as York, Hisense, Haier, Gree and Midea usually rely on distributor led warranties. Dimplex’s UK based support gives it an advantage over many of those value brands.

The installer’s guarantee

Every MCS certified installer must belong to a recognised consumer code and provide a workmanship guarantee. This covers the installation itself, which is just as important as the manufacturer warranty.

Which Property Types Are Dimplex Heat Pumps Best Suited For?

Dimplex heat pumps are best suited to semi detached homes, bungalows, detached houses, older properties (particularly with the high temperature EDGE range) and rental homes moving away from electric heating. They are a sensible all rounder for most typical homes across Kent and the South East.

Semi detached homes

The classic 3 bed semi in Maidstone, Ashford, Sittingbourne or Tonbridge is a natural fit for a mid sized Dimplex unit, with room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder and only a few radiators to upgrade.

Older and period homes

Victorian terraces in Canterbury, 1930s semis in Swanley and older cottages across the Weald can be harder to heat at low temperatures. The EDGE range’s higher flow temperature means some of these homes can keep more of their existing radiators. Insulation upgrades still help a great deal, and listed buildings need consent.

Bungalows

Bungalows are often among the easiest homes to convert, with simple pipe runs and lofts that are easy to insulate. They are common along the Kent coast from Herne Bay to Birchington and around Hythe and New Romney.

Rental properties and electric heated homes

This is where Dimplex has a natural edge. Many rental flats, bungalows and older homes in Kent rely on storage heaters, often Dimplex’s own. Switching these homes to a heat pump usually means adding radiators and pipework, but it can cut tenants’ heating bills by more than half and lift EPC ratings. The government has confirmed plans for privately rented homes in England to reach EPC band C by 2030, and landlords can claim the £7,500 grant.

Detached homes

Larger homes around Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and the Kent countryside may need one of the bigger Dimplex outputs. For very large or high heat loss homes, brands with larger single units such as Grant, NIBE, Stiebel Eltron or Mitsubishi are worth comparing.

New builds

New homes built to the Future Homes Standard are well insulated and moving away from gas boilers, which suits any heat pump. Dimplex competes here with brands such as Daikin, Samsung, Baxi, Ideal and Hisense.

Less suitable homes

Homes without outdoor space are not suitable. If the lowest possible price matters more than brand support, value options from York, Haier, Gree or Midea may come in cheaper.

What Are the Ratings for Dimplex Heat Pumps?

The ratings for Dimplex heat pumps are hard to pin down, because Dimplex’s Trustpilot reviews are dominated by electric fires, heaters and storage heaters, and there is no dedicated Which? brand score for Dimplex heat pumps. Independent UK feedback on its heat pumps specifically is still limited.

Trustpilot rating

Dimplex’s UK Trustpilot reviews mostly cover products like electric fires, panel heaters and Quantum storage heaters, with comments on delivery, product faults and customer service. Very few reviews relate to air source heat pumps, so the overall score is not a reliable guide to how a Dimplex heat pump will perform in your home.

When researching Dimplex heat pumps, it helps to:

  • Check your installer’s reviews, as they will handle most of your aftercare
  • Ask for references from local customers with a Dimplex heat pump
  • Separate electric heater feedback from heat pump feedback

By comparison, Octopus Energy and Aira have thousands of UK Trustpilot reviews, though these cover energy supply and installation as well as the heat pump.

Which? rating

Which? rates heat pump brands using surveys of UK owners, looking at reliability and customer satisfaction. Brands with many UK heat pump owners, such as Mitsubishi, Daikin, Vaillant and Samsung, are the most likely to be featured. Dimplex does not yet have enough UK heat pump owners for a dedicated Which? score. Which? has tested Dimplex electric heaters, but those results do not tell you much about its heat pumps.

What installers say

Among UK installers, Dimplex heat pumps are generally regarded as dependable, well supported units, with the R290 EDGE range drawing particular interest for older homes. The main reservations are a smaller dedicated heat pump network than the market leaders and changes to the range over the years.

Can a Dimplex Heat Pump Work With Solar Panels and Smart Tariffs?

A Dimplex heat pump can work with solar panels, home batteries and smart time of use tariffs, and combining them is one of the best ways to bring your heating bills down even further. Kent is one of the sunniest counties in the UK, so solar and a heat pump make a strong pairing here.

Solar panels

Solar panels produce most of their power from spring to autumn, when a heat pump mainly heats hot water. Setting your Dimplex system to heat the cylinder around midday helps you use your own free electricity.

Home batteries

A battery stores cheap off peak or spare solar electricity and releases it later when the heat pump needs it, reducing what you buy at peak rates.

Smart tariffs

Many suppliers now offer heat pump or time of use tariffs with cheaper electricity at set times. A Dimplex system can be scheduled to do more of its heating and hot water in those cheaper windows, much as Dimplex storage heaters have long made use of cheaper night time electricity.

Controls and app

Newer Dimplex models offer smart controls and app access, building on Dimplex’s experience with connected electric heating. They are easy to use, but less tightly linked to specific tariffs than some rivals. The Octopus Cosy 6 links directly with the Octopus app and Cosy tariff, Aira bundles its own app and energy plan, Samsung uses SmartThings, LG uses ThinQ and Panasonic offers Aquarea Smart Cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dimplex make a hot water only heat pump?

Yes, Dimplex makes the Edel, a hot water heat pump that heats only your domestic hot water, not your radiators. It combines a small heat pump with a hot water cylinder and can replace an immersion heater, which suits flats and homes with electric heating. Hot water only heat pumps are not eligible for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

Does a Dimplex heat pump work during a power cut?

No, a Dimplex heat pump does not work during a power cut, because its compressor, fan and pumps all need electricity. Most gas and oil boilers also stop working in a power cut. A well insulated home will hold its warmth for several hours, and a hot water cylinder keeps stored hot water available for a while.

Can a Dimplex heat pump work with microbore pipes?

A Dimplex heat pump can sometimes work with microbore pipes, but narrow 8mm or 10mm pipework often restricts the flow of water that heat pumps need. In many homes, the main pipe runs are upgraded to wider pipes while short microbore tails to individual radiators are kept. Your installer will check your pipework during the survey.

Can a Dimplex heat pump heat a conservatory or extension?

Yes, a Dimplex heat pump can heat a conservatory or extension, as long as it is included in the heat loss calculation and has suitable radiators or underfloor heating. Glass conservatories lose heat quickly, so they may need their own zone or a separate heating plan. Building regulations may also require a conservatory to be separated from the main house by external quality doors.

How long does a Dimplex heat pump last?

A Dimplex heat pump typically lasts 15 to 20 years when it is installed well and serviced every year. That is often longer than a gas boiler, which usually lasts 10 to 15 years. Keeping the outdoor unit clear and booking annual services helps it reach the upper end of that range.
